Sleep and regeneration in balance
A healthy sleep is one of the body’s most important regeneration mechanisms. While we rest, the organism repairs cells, regulates hormones, processes memories, reduces inflammatory activity and strengthens the immune system. But how much sleep is healthy – and why do many guests at Park Igls Medical Spa Resort often sleep more deeply and restfully after just a few days than they do at home?
Scientific recommendations are clear...
For adults, healthy sleep ideally means seven to nine hours per night. At the same time, studies show that there are individual differences. Some people regenerate sufficiently with as little as six and a half hours, while others truly require up to nine hours to achieve the same level of recovery. With increasing age, the need for sleep does not decrease; rather, sleep architecture changes: sleep becomes lighter, more fragmented and more easily disturbed. This can also influence overall sleep health.
What matters most is therefore not a fixed number of hours, but the question: Do I feel alert, focused and emotionally balanced during the day?
Sleep is not a passive state, but a precisely regulated biological programme. During the night, processes take place that are only limited during wakefulness.
What happens during sleep:
During deep sleep, certain brain cells shrink slightly. This creates space for lymphatic fluid, which removes metabolic waste, proteins and deposits – a key mechanism for long-term brain health.
Sleep controls the activity of more than 700 genes. Too little sleep increases stress hormone levels, impairs insulin sensitivity and reduces the release of growth hormone – the body’s most important regenerative stimulus for muscles, skin and tissue.
Even a single poor night can significantly reduce the activity of certain immune cells; only sufficient deep and REM sleep restores immune function.
During REM sleep, the brain processes emotional impressions. Sleep deprivation has been shown to increase stress reactivity and reduce resilience.
Even a few short nights can affect glucose metabolism and temporarily raise blood sugar to prediabetic levels.
WHY GUESTS AT PARK IGLS SLEEP BETTER
»At Park Igls, we observe that sleep health almost always improves within the first four to five days of a stay«, explains the medical team at Park Igls. The reasons can be found in the structured setting of Modern Mayr Medicine.
- Regular mealtimes and light, easily digestible food relieve the digestive tract
Digestion and sleep are closely connected via the vagus nerve: a calm gut supports a calm nervous system and, therefore, deeper, healthier sleep. - Structured daily rhythm
A clear routine with fixed times for meals, exercise and rest phases stabilises the circadian rhythm – the internal clock that regulates sleep and metabolism. - Movement without overexertion
The activity and exercise programme, along with the therapies applied, increase physiological sleep pressure without overloading the body. Moderate exertion has been shown to improve deep sleep and sleep continuity, which are key components of sleep health. - Fewer stimuli, less pressure
Away from everyday stress and constant digital availability, stress levels decrease and the body can fully regenerate during the night.
SLEEP DEPRIVATION IS NOT A LIFESTYLE ISSUE
Insufficient sleep is often underestimated, yet it is a medical risk factor. Studies show that those who consistently sleep less than six hours per night increase their risk of cardiovascular disease, weight gain, metabolic disorders and a wide range of psychological strain. Susceptibility to infections increases and emotional stability declines, with even just two very short nights being enough to measurably impair cognitive performance.
Factors supporting healthy sleep:
- Consistent bedtimes and waking times
- Avoiding large meals immediately before sleep
- Reduced screen time in the evenings
- Cool sleep environment between 16 and 19 °C
- No alcohol as a »sleep aid«
- Evening rituals such as reading, breathing exercises or a warm shower
- Daylight in the morning, darkness in the evening
The »Sleep Fit« programme at Park Igls was developed for people who suffer from insomnia, difficulty falling or staying asleep, daytime fatigue, inner restlessness or non-restorative sleep. Rather than relying on superficial solutions, the programme focuses on a well-founded combination of medical diagnostics, manual therapy, mental coaching and relaxation-promoting treatments. Following medical consultation, the following are available on site for extended diagnostics and therapy: mobile sleep laboratory, medical hypnosis/Hypno-acupuncture and IHHT (Cell Training).
