Spa

Simply relax

Our spa area is the perfect place to relax. The heated indoor pool offers plenty of space for a few vigorous lengths, while the sauna soothes tired muscles and minds. Don't forget to check out the Kneipp water therapy station – a tried and tested way of stimulating the flow of blood to the arms and legs. Finally, before you leave, take a moment to step outside and breathe in the fresh alpine air.

A day at Park Igls

A success story stretching back over 100 years

The history of Park Igls

The quiet village of Igls near Innsbruck was officially a health resort under Emperor Franz Joseph. From 1905 the building which today houses Park Igls was built as a sanatorium, and from 1918 it was known as a "physical-dietary high-altitude health resort". There is a description from the time which spoke of "... a fine bourgeois family hotel with doctors, attached spa and bathing establishment and special dietary regime", indicating that even back then the approach and aims were very similar to those pursued at Park Igls today.

World War II had a major impact on Park Igls. The building was initially used to house people forced to flee from South Tyrol (Italy) to North Tyrol (Austria). Later it became a home for mothers and children until 1945. In the postwar years it was inhabited first by the occupying French forces, then used as a shelter for the homeless. Finally, once the Allies had left Austria, the run-down sanatorium was converted into a bed-and-breakfast.

The future of the Park Hotel took a significant turn when Dr Egon Balzar and his wife Hertha took over in 1959 and made plans to turn it into a sanatorium once again. The sudden death of Dr Balzar delayed this undertaking, but the building was eventually expanded into a hotel with 90 beds, a swimming pool and a tennis court, including extensive modernisation of all the facilities and amenities on site.

Hertha Balzar's nephew, Dr Stephan Beck, implemented his aunt's vision a few years later with the support of Medical Director, Dr Martin Winkler. The "Kurzentrum Parkhotel Igls" put the focus back on the health of the guests, building on the proven diagnostic and therapeutic tradition of Dr Franz Xaver Mayr. In the following years, large parts of the hotel were renovated and redesigned. The focus on medicine was continuously refined until it was positioned as "Parkhotel Igls - Zentrum der Modernen Mayr-Medizin" in 2005.

The last comprehensive renovation in 2009 brought the building up to today's standards in the most important areas, including disabled-friendly access, the enlargement of the medical department and an extension of the underground garage. The centre was then reopened as "Parkhotel Igls – Gesundheit im Zentrum".
